  2. Our west Alaska Largest Cities Denver, Colorado Boise, Idaho Salt Lake City, Utah Las Vegas, Nevada Portland, Oregon Seattle, Washington • Colorado • Wyoming • Montana • Utah • Idaho • Nevada • California • Oregon • Washington • Alaska • Hawaii

  3. The west as a Region • Mostly comprised of arid to semi-arid plateaus and plains and forested mountains • Western US is the largest region, covering more than half the land area of the US • Most geographically diverse region of US • Divided into Pacific States and Mountain States • Still one of the most sparsely settled areas in the US with 49.5 inhabitants per square mile

  4. The west as a Region These maps from the 2000 US Census highlight differences from state to state of three minority groups. Note that most of the American Indian, Hispanic, and Asian population is in the West.

  5. western Literature • The ‘Old West’ is embedded in America's folklore • Shaped by a variety of ethnic groups (Hawaii is the only state in the union in which Asian Americans outnumber white American residents) • Image of the cowboy, the homesteader and westward expansion took real events and transmuted them into a myth of the West influencing American culture since at least the 1920s

  6. western Literature • Influenced by history as former Spanish and Mexican territories, as well as native cultures • Often depicts a society organized around codes of honor and personal, direct or private justice • Often stresses the harshness of the wilderness and frequently sets the action in an arid, desolate landscape

  7. western Literature • Hawaiian literature has its origins in Polynesian mythology; it was originally preserved & expanded solely through oral traditions, as the ancient Hawaiians never developed a writing system • Little of the rich literature of Alaska is about oil exploration. Instead, most works recount Alaskan wilderness adventures. Even more popular have been Alaskan homesteading narratives, tales of people who have gone into the bush not for oil or short-term adventure, but to live
