A Time To Pray Jon Wright 2nd July 2006
A prayer template: Matt 6:9-13 (NIV) • Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, • Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. • Give us today our daily bread. • Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. • And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
The Lords Prayer is a Model • The Lords prayer is often now elevated beyond its function as a model • It starts by addressing God as Father, other titles used for prayer have been Lord, Master, Daddy • It then sets Gods order as highest priority and recognizes that the physical and spiritual realms are linked • It considers our physical & spiritual needs • It considers others spiritual needs • It asks for guidance
How can we pray? • Alone (Matt 6-5-6) • In a group (Matt 18:19-20 - where 2 or 3 come in My name) Acts has lots of examples • Sitting (1 Chron 17:16-27 David sat and prayed) • Standing (Neh 9:5) • Kneeling (1 Kings 8:54 Solomon kneeled) • With uplifted arms (1 Tim 2:8) • While bowing (Exo 34:8 Moses bowed) • Face down (Joshua 7:6)
How often should we pray? • At set times (Daniel 6:10) - 3x a day • All night (Lk 6:12 - Jesus prayed all night) • When facing trying times (Acts 16:25 - Paul/Silas), Neh 2:4-5 • Unceasingly 1 Th 5:17 (pray continually) • We can pray for Nation, nonbelievers, the sick, the poor and oppressed, self, family, church, community • And don’t forget to spend time listening for Gods’ reply - it’s bidirectional communication
