Foundational Research to support Buzz About IT! Chapter 4 Guided Reading: Scaffolding Reading Development With Informational Text
Basic Tenets of Guided Reading • Students - primary interactive readers • Teacher – facilitates reading and discussions • Most frequently in small groups (4-6) • Sometimes one-on-one or whole group
Vary the Resources Used for Guided Reading of IT • Books • Magazines • Newspaper Articles • Pamphlets/Brochures • Internet or CD-ROM Text • Parts of a Book (chapter) • Sections of Text
Engagement Through Authentic and Meaningful Learning “Michael Pressley and colleagues (2001) found that in the classrooms of the most effective literacy teachers, 90 percent of the students were engaged over 90 percent of the time!” (page 78) Peer Collaboration Among Teachers and Students
Common Core State Standards and Informational Text • Discussions and writing in response to text become more elaborate and student-directed through the years (routine) • Complex instructional and conversational elements produce engaging and relevant discussions, including considerable peer collaboration that involves student-to-student interaction (as occurs during read aloud)
Six Types of Flexible Grouping Models • Interest-Based Grouping(common interest) • Needs-Based Grouping(common need) • Level-Based Grouping (similar reading levels of narrative text) (variable reading levels among informational text: depends on background knowledge of topic, text structures/features) • Topic-Based Grouping(similar content-area topic) • Author’s Craft Grouping(author techniques) • Random Grouping(no criteria in mind)
Three Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading of IT • Explicit Teaching of Individual Comprehension Strategies • Explicit Teaching of Groups of Comprehension Strategies • Idea Circles
Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading and Application • Explicit Teaching of Individual Comprehension Strategies monitor comprehension, activate/apply relevant prior knowledge, generate questions/thinking aloud, uncover text structure, draw inferences, construct visual representations, summarize, etc.
Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading and Application • Explicit Teaching of Groups of Comprehension Strategies + Reciprocal Teaching (make predictions, ask questions, clarify, summarize) + Collaborative Strategic Reading variation of reciprocal teaching (preview, click and clunk, get the gist, wrap up) + Transactional Strategies Instruction apply interpretive comprehension strategies flexibly that are learned over extended period of time
Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading and Application • Idea Circles reading strategies are taught and practiced in support of learning science/social studies concepts
