  1. ANTE TODO • Spanish has two verbs that mean to know: saber and conocer. • They cannot be used interchangeably. • Note that all forms of saber and conocer are regular in the present tense except their yo forms.

  2. The preterit forms of conocer are regular, as it is an –er verb. (No stem changes!) • The preterit forms of saber are highly irregular, and will be learned later in the course. • Note: The meanings of saber and conocer change in the preterit. In the preterit they do not translate as “knew” but rather: saber = found out conocer = met

  3. Saber means to know a fact or piece(s) of information or to know how to do something. • When it means to know how to do something, it is followed by the infinitive form of the verb. No sé tu número de teléfono. I don’t know your telephone number. Mi hermana sabe hablar francés. My sister knows how to speak French.

  4. Conocer means to know or be familiar/acquainted with a person, place, or thing. ¿Conoces la ciudad de Nueva York? Do you know New York City? No conozco a tu amigo Esteban. I don’t know your friend Esteban.

  5. When the direct object of conocer is a person or pet, the personal a is used. ¿Conoces los restaurantes de Tegucigalpa? but ¿Conoces a Miguel Rodríguez?

  6. ¡ATENCIÓN! With foods, the verb “saber” has another meaning “to taste.” • Saber + [adjective] is used to explain how something tastes. Sabe muy dulce/bien/amargo. It tastes very sweet/nice/bitter. • Saber + a means to taste like. Sabe a ajo. It tastes like garlic. No sabe a nada. It doesn’t taste like anything.
