  5. Learning Objective • We will know that mitochondria liberate energy that cells need to function.

  6. Revisit DSJ • Prompt: • What does a fire need to burn? • Fuel • Oxygen • What is released when fuel is burned? • -Energy in the form of heat and light. • This is similar to RESPIRATION in that cells “burn” food molecules to get energy.

  7. What is Respiration? • In the process of respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as sugar and release the energy they contain.

  8. What is Respiration? • Cells store energy in the form of sugar.

  9. What is Respiration? • Cells withdraw energy by breakingdown the sugars in the process of respiration.

  10. Mitochondria • Mitochondria are known as the “powerhouses” of the cell.

  11. Mitochondria • They convertenergy in foodmolecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.

  12. Mitochondria • In other words, mitochondria liberate or “free” the energy in food molecules for the cell to use.
