DSJ #10 • Prompt: What does a fire need to burn? What is released when fuel is burned? • Do this on page 24B of your notebook.
Learning Objective • We will know that mitochondria liberate energy that cells need to function.
Revisit DSJ • Prompt: • What does a fire need to burn? • Fuel • Oxygen • What is released when fuel is burned? • -Energy in the form of heat and light. • This is similar to RESPIRATION in that cells “burn” food molecules to get energy.
What is Respiration? • In the process of respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as sugar and release the energy they contain.
What is Respiration? • Cells store energy in the form of sugar.
What is Respiration? • Cells withdraw energy by breakingdown the sugars in the process of respiration.
Mitochondria • Mitochondria are known as the “powerhouses” of the cell.
Mitochondria • They convertenergy in foodmolecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
Mitochondria • In other words, mitochondria liberate or “free” the energy in food molecules for the cell to use.
Respiration vs. Respiration • Respiration that takes place inside of cells is not the same as breathing air in and out of the lungs.
Raw Materials of Respiration • The raw materials of respiration are oxygen and sugar.
Products of Respiration • The products of respiration are carbondioxide, water, and energy.
Photosynthesis and Respiration • You can think of photosynthesis and respiration as oppositeprocesses.
Glue in SNB • 24A: Respiration Notes
Respiration Diagram • Turn to page 125 of your textbook. • Copy the diagram of Stage 2of respiration ONLY. • Do this on page 25B of your notebook. • It must be in color. • Include the description of Stage 2. • Include all arrows and labels.
DSR #10 • Prompt: Write down 3 things that you learned about respiration. • Do this on page 24B of your notebook (under DSJ #10).
