  10. IN THE PAST…. • RACE and ACTS proves an industrial powerhouse for the DVB project • ACTS provides convincing evidence of the DVB satellite, cable, and SMATV systems • DVB digital terrestrial system developed, proven, and tested in ACTS

  11. IN THE PAST AND PRESENT... • Digital video compression and multimedia content systems based on RACE and ACTS enabling technology • Virtual studio systems rely on ACTS and RACE technology • Quality evaluation methods rely on ACTS and RACE technology

  12. IN THE PRESENT... • ACTS dominates the development of the MPEG4 systems, which will be the twenty-first century tools for multimedia via broadcast and the Internet.

  13. The present • INTERNET > TV, TV> INTERNET • All standardisation groups such as DAVIC, DVB and ACTS are incorporating Internet Technology • TV anytime, TV anywhere • Cable modems, WebTV

  14. TODAY • Middleware is the critical element of all media delivery systems • Commonality across transports and nations is sought • We can create the twenty-first century as the age of ‘multimedia software broadcasting’, and user friendly interfaces.

  15. Clear conclusions.. • Economic efficiency is helped by open systems and open information • Schemes like ACTS allow open systems to be created, particularly important for broadcasting • The fifth framework must heavily involve multimedia convergence and delivery, and middleware.

  16. More information on ACTS • ACTSLINE • http://www.actsline.org •  ACTS Multimedia Domain • http://www.uk.infowin.org/ACTS/ANALYSYS/ • CONCERTATION/MULTIMEDIA/

  17. PREDICTING THE EMERGING INFORMATION SOCIETY • No one knows for sure, but…. • most likely a combination of digital broadcasting and Internet delivery (wideband and narrowband) • Eventual dominance of TCP/IP and multicast/unicast flexibility over all transports • Synergy of digital broadcasting and webcasting, and middleware are critical frontiers

  18. Necessary tools/conditions for the Information Society • Tools for Content Creation • Content Management and Protection • Business models, Conditional Access • Brokerage • Human Machine Interfaces • Content Access, Ubiquitous Access Home networks and storage Metadata and Hyperlinks • Agent Technology • Know How of Information presentation

  19. The future: Adapting to a new environment • Commercial and competitive pressure •  short-term focus instead of long-term research •  Competition to increase need for co-operation in RTD •  ensure coherence in infrastructures and services •  adapt to multiple players and new technologies •  Large pan-European programmes to play a role •  fewer but larger projects •  emphasis on industry-wide consensus • rather than technological gadgetry

  20. Fifth Framework Programme 4 Thematic programs • Quality of life and living resources • User-friendly information society • Competitive and sustainable growth • Energy, environment & sustainable development 3 Horizontal programs • The international role of Community research • Innovation and SME participation • Human research potential and socio-economics

  21. Information Society Technologies Program (1999-2002) Each key action to have a balance of the complete range of RTD activities from basic research to demonstration and take-up

  22. Research Networking • "Supply of trans-European broadband interconnections • between national research, education and training networks" • Broadband interconnections • Testbeds for advanced networking • and application experiments
