  1. Name____________________________ Tutor Group _____ Timber Timber is another word for wood, it used in construction for variety of purposes. Look at the pictures below and list as many uses of timber in construction as you can think of. Grading Timber ranges in strength, C means Coniferous or softwoods such as pine which is the most common timber used in construction. D mean Deciduous of hardwoods such as Oak which are more expensive than softwoods. The strength is measure in N/mm2, a piece of wood with C25 stamped on it will be a softwood that has a strength of 25N/mm2. Timber is useful in construction as it comes in long lengths, it is relatively strong for its weight and as long as we keep planting trees we will not run out of it. 1 . Name five jobs a carpenter might do on a building site? 2. Which is stronger, D25 or C35? 3. Sustainable means that we wont run out of something, is timber sustainable (explain your answer)? 4.
