  3. Historical Context • Overfishing dates back to the 11th century. • For centuries, after depleting a species, fisheries have moved on to new areas and repeated the process. • By the 14th century, discussions were already starting on the depletion of fish due to overfishing. • Now, with new technologies, the problem has reached record highs with nearly no limits on its reach in the 21st century. • There are over 15,300 species of fish in the world.

  4. Sources of Conflict Human Population Fish Population As the human population goes up, the need for nutrition goes up, and therefore the rate of fishing goes up. Subsequently, the fish population goes down. This could lead to wars over who is allowed to fish and who isn’t allowed to fish, how many fish can be caught yearly, or where are people allowed to fish.

  5. Major Players Overfishing is a problem in most countries all over the world. Many fisheries contributing to overfishing are in newly developing island countries. This is because fishing is main part of their economies. The Atlantic Canadian Cod Fishery is a great example of a company overexploiting fish. A temporary ban was put on cod fishing in Canada because the cod population was decreasing too quickly. Other countries greatly contributing to overfishing are South Asia and Africa.

  6. Geographical Context • Overfishing is a global problem and will eventually affect the entire world. • For now, overfishing will directly affect the regions that predominantly depend on fish as a food source. Regions such as eastern Asia, Russia, and western South America.

  7. Impact On U.S. • Average U.S. citizen in 2009 consumed about 15.8 lbs. of fish and shellfish • 84% of the fish consumed in the U.S. is imported • However, the U.S.’s use of fish in it’s diet has decreased along with the world population of fish.

  8. Solutions • Create a fishing limit • Monitoring system • Spread the word • Write a letter to the government • Know what your eating
