What does an Examiner do? Completes a standardisation exercise to apply the mark scheme correctly for an exam series, supported by a Senior Examiner Marks student responses to the standard set by Principal Examiner Marks steadily throughout the marking period to ensure accuracy of marking is maintained Meets all deadlines Regularly communicates with Team Leader or PE and updates with progress/escalate an issues Provides the Principal Examiner with feedback on work seen New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Overview of an examination series Before the exam Before standardisation • You complete New Examiner Training • You install ePEN and check access • You complete ePEN training • Team Leader contacts you • You download Question Paper & Mark Scheme (10am day after exam) • You complete some familiarisation marking with live candidate responses • You feedback on the mark scheme to your Team Leader or PE • The Team Leaders, Principal Examiners & Assistant PEs meet to agree the standard for marking this series New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Overview of an examination series Standardisation A standardisation meeting is held each series where you get trained to mark. There are three different types of standardisation methods. For GCE Resistant Materials you will be doing OLS. The next couple of slides give you a bit more information about each type New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Standardisation Method - OLS Online standardisation (OLS) • You access final mark scheme • You will be informed that you can start standardisation exercise • You complete practice items • Team Leader or PE provides you with feedback • You complete qualification items within 48 hours of the standardisation exercise being available • You can start marking those items you pass • If you do not pass first time get further feedback from your Team Leader before attempting a second qualification set of items New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Standardisation Method - Centra Centra standardisation • Before this event you will need to complete the training exercise that was sent to you by the Centra team (shortly before the exam series) • You attend in a virtual meeting environment • You will be briefed by the Principal Examiner • You will be talked through the exam paper and mark scheme • You will mark a sample of pre-selected scripts provided at the meeting • Team Leader or PE gives you with feedback • You will leave the meeting knowing how to apply the mark scheme for that series New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Standardisation Method - Traditional Traditional standardisation • You attend a face-to-face meeting – venue details available on www.edexcelgateway.com • You will be briefed by the Principal Examiner • You will be talked through the exam paper and mark scheme • You will mark a sample of pre-selected scripts provided at the meeting • Team Leader or PE provides you with feedback • You will leave the meeting knowing how to apply the mark scheme for that series New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Overview of an examination series At the end of the marking period During marking • Submit a feedback report on marking • Your Team Leader or PE samples your marking • If there are any issues with your marking you will get some feedback • You mark your allocation by the contract completion deadline – there are milestones in your contract to help you pace your marking • You can mark extra responses, if they are available, after you have completed your allocation New Examiner Training – Summer 2013

Support from the Examining team • Team Leader (TL) • You will be assigned a Team Leader (or a PE if there are no team leaders) • They are the first person you should contact if you have any problems with marking • They check your marking throughout the marking period and provide you with feedback • Assistant Principal Examiner • Supervises the Team Leaders • Is available to answer any queries your Team Leader can’t help with • Principal Examiner (PE) • Supervises assistant PEs and TLs • Sets the standard for marking this years responses New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Support from the Subject Team • Subject Teams in GQ Assessment are responsible for supporting and delivering the marking and ensuring that it is all completed in time for the grade boundaries to be determined (awarded). • The team will contact you before marking starts: • to provide you with the key dates and deadlines and information about how to access the documentation you require for marking • to inform you when the standardisation exercise will be available if meeting is on Centra • to provide you with and updated copy of the mark scheme • The team may also contact you at other times, as necessary New Examiner Training – Summer 2013

Mark scheme – Short Answer • Short answer questions have recall answers written against them, these questions are usually marked out of 1, 2 or 3 marks. New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Mark Scheme - Longer Answer • Some longer answer questions require a candidate to provide more points in their response or to identify the answer and then explain/justify the answer in some detail for an additional point (such as the example here). New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Quality of Written Communication(QWC) • Quality of Written Communication marks (QWC) are awarded as part of a hollistic assessment of some questions on this paper. These questions are generally marked by expert examiners and appear at the end of a question paper. New Examiner Training – Summer 2013
Marking Exercise • Download the marking exercise by visiting: http://www.edexcel.com/i-am-a/aa/new-aa/gce-dandt/Pages/Home.aspx • Download the 6RM03 Graduate Training Pack and marking grid. Read through each sample and mark each candidate response available. • Once you have marked all the responses and completed the marking grid please email the marking grid to the subject team at d&t@pearson.com no later than Sunday 5th May.
