Quad-District Meeting Middle School Math Program Recommendation
Other factors? Mathematical Practice Standards (CCSS) Solve complex multi-step problems independently using the most efficient method.
Connected Math 3 Rationale and Program Implementation 6th and 7th grade (2013-14) 8th grade (2014-15)
Rationale for Connected Math 3 Pedagogical Structure (Investigation) • Launch • Explore • Summarize In-School and At-Home • Application • Connection • Extension
Rationale for Connected Math 3 “Opportunities to construct mathematical arguments and to critique other students solutions’ and strategies” “…translate a problem situation in an expression or equation and manipulate the equation to find a solution, to ‘decontextualize’”
Rationale for Connected Math 3 School Visits and Consultations Teacher Input • Students ask higher order questions without prompting. • Stronger and more enduring conceptual understanding. • Connections are drawn through real-life contextualization and inquiry. • Students demonstrate high levels of motivation and interest in mathematics across ability levels. • Academic performance and mastery of mathematical skills is maintained and increases over time. “Tons of inquiry” “Student-centered” “Immediate feedback available” “Targets various learning levels” “Many open-ended questions” “Looks like PARCC” “Tons of online resources” “Many problems available for practice”
Connected Math 3 Implementation Plan Overview • 6th and 7th grade (2013-14): maintain current course/placement structure • 8th grade (2014-15): make decisions about course/placement structure by December, 2013. Staff Development February, 13: Launch with teachers and administrators (focus on Practice Standards and Assessment) Summer, 13: 4 days of curriculum development with Nancy Schultz Sept – June, 13-14: 5 days of staff development with Nancy Schultz (grades 6 & 7); 2 days of staff development with Nancy Schultz (grades 8 & 9) Budget • ~$85.00 per student • Includes print unit investigations, online materials, supplemental teacher resources
