  1. 4th Grade Math Curriculum Night February 20, 2014

  2. 4.OA Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Use the 4 operations with whole numbers to solve problems • Interpret multiplication equation as a comparison • Multiply or divide to solve word problems • Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the 4 operations • Find all factor pairs for a whole number • Determine whether a given whole number is prime or composite • Generate or shape pattern that follows a given rule

  3. Examples of 4.0A • There are 28 white ducks swimming in a pond. • Twice as many brown ducks flew in and landed in the pond. • Then half of the white ducks flew away. How many ducks remained in the pond?

  4. Examples 4.0A continued. . . • Tom has twice as many marbles as Luke. Together they have 39 marbles. How many marbles does Tom have? • What are the next three numbers in this pattern? 6,000, 6,003, 6,009, 6,018, 6,030, 6,045, ___,__,____

  5. Number and Operations in Base Ten 4.NBT • Place value up to 100,000; use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place • Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form • Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers • Multiply whole numbers of up to 4 digits by one-digit and multiply 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers • Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to 4 digit dividends and 1 digit divisors

  6. Number and Operations in Base Ten 4.NBT Examples • There were 4,536 people at the carnival. Each person bought 8 tickets. How many tickets were bought at the carnival? • Which choice has a total of 4,520? • 45 hundreds and 52 tens • 45 hundreds and 20 tens • 40 hundreds and 62 tens • 38 hundreds and 72 tens

  7. Number and Operations in Base Ten 4.NBT Examples continued . . . • Sabrina rounded the size of the park to the nearest thousand acres. Her estimate was 276,000 acres. What number could be the exact number of acres? • The math team went to the aquarium to do research. Each team member paid $12 for the trip. There were 25 team members on the trip. What was the total amount the team members paid?

  8. Number and OperationsFractions 4.NF • Equivalent fractions • Compare fractions with different numerators and different denominators • Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole • Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators

  9. Numbers and OperationsFractions 4.NF continued . . . • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators • Multiply a fraction by a whole number • Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number • Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100 • Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100 • Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size

  10. Number and OperationsFractions 4.NF Examples • Which choice is equal to 2.5? a. 2/5 b. 2 1/5 c. 2 4/10 d. 5/2 • Marcie and Alexis went running. The distance Alexis ran was farther than the distance Marcie ran. Marcie ran 5/8 of a mile. What could be the distance Alexis ran? a. 2/3mile b. 10/16 mile c. ½ mile d. 3/8 mile

  11. Number and OperationsFractions 4.NF Examples • Kim had 120 cards in a box. She gave 6/10 of the cards to Maddy. How many cards did Kim have left in the box? a. 12 b. 20 c. 48 d. 60 • Julie used 12 ¾ gallons of water on her garden on Monday. What is the total amount of water Julie used to water her garden on Monday and Tuesday? a. 27 gallons b. 27 ½ gallons c. 28 gallons d. 28 ¼ gallons

  12. Measurement and Data 4.MD • Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm, kg,g,lb, oz, l,ml,hr,min, sec • Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. For example: know that 1ft is 12 times as long as 1in • Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money

  13. Measurement and Data 4.MD continued. . . • Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems • Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, ¼, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. • Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement

  14. Measurement and Data 4.MD continued. . . • An angle is measured with reference to a circle • An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees • Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor • Recognize angle measure as additive. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems

  15. Measurement and Data 4.MD Examples • Sue has 10 gallons of water. How many quarts of water does she have? a. 10 b. 20 c. 30 d. 40 • The sum of the measures of the three angles in a triangle is 180 degrees. What is the measure of one angle in an equilateral triangle?

  16. Geometry 4.G • Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in 2 dimensional figures. • Classify 2 dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines. • Recognize a line of symmetry for a 2 dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts.

  17. Test • 12%-17% Operations/Algebraic Thinking • 22%-27% Operations/Base 10 • 27%-32% Fractions • 12%-17% Geometry • 12%-17% Measurement & Data
