BACKGROUND • Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security (Nutrition Coalition) - High level group of policy, programme and political leaders • Representatives from Government, Planning Commission, Media, NGOs, National and International Development Partners, Private Sector • Prof M S Swaminathan is leading the Nutrition Coalition evolved at the National Nutrition Conclave organised at MSSRF in Aug 2007

OBJECTIVES • To conceptualise, organise and catalyse concerted efforts towards policy initiatives and creating a framework for strategies to address the problem of Malnutrition in the Country • To function as a national observatory of issues and international best practices adopted • To create a platform for discourse on the strategies adopted and working in the various states and provide regular feedback assessment of the impact • Establish and Evolve a Centre for Excellence for national guidance to all Institutions working in area of malnutrition • To organise research and development on the issues affecting the problem of nutrition in the Indian context

CURRENT STRUCTURE • Human Resources - Board of Directors, Chief Operating Officer, Consultant (Dharani Organic Farming) - Sunil Gupta and Team • Funds - Rs 17.76 Lakh in Bank account in the form of Bank balance and Fixed Deposits as on March 31, 2013. • Total Annual Expenditure on activities - Rs 46.5 lakhs for 2012-13

  6. INTITUTIONALIZATION • Over the past several months, there were discussions around the Institutionalization of the Coalition. These discussions were taken forward in various meetings of the Task Force constituted for this purpose • The Participating Members under the chairmanship of Mr Nanda reinforced the concensual view of creation of a formal legal structure to lead the national movement amongst the different players • The various formats/options were studied and analysed in detail (Section 25 Company, Society, Trust) • The Society format is recommended to be the most flexible in terms of the membership and governance structure

  9. GOVERNING COUNCIL • Governing Council - Shall be overall responsible for the affairs of the Society • Membership Structure of Governing Council • President • Vice-President • Secretary • Treasurer • At least two founding members • Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

GOVERNING COUNCIL (cont.) • Membership Structure of Governing Council • At least four (4) members appointed from amongst persons recommended by Institutional Members. • At least four (4) from the category of eminent persons well known in the field of health and nutrition/governance/policy makers/public life • At least four (4) members appointed from amongst persons recommended by Government Members • Other members as appointed in terms of the Rules and Regulations

  11. PRESIDENT AND CEO • President - Person of eminence appointed by the Governing Council. President shall be overall responsible to manage the affairs of the Society and shall report to the Governing Council • Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - Shall be responsible for managing day to day affairs of the Society and shall report to the President and the Governing Council

COMMITTEES • Secretariat - Responsible for logistic and administrative support to the General Body Members, Governing Council Members, Task Force/Action Groups • Advisory Group - Committee of Experts - Shall provide advisory services to Society • Membership Screening Committee - To screen membership proposals • Other committees as appropriate
