The Senior Honors Project Proposal Style File A Tutorial by Forrest Scott Brinkley
This is a simple approach • The style outlined here just skims the surface of the capabilities in SWP. • The style file generates the necessary “blanks” for your personal information to be entered as Front Matter in SWP. • Further customization will require more reading and/or training than I can offer, but it is DEFINITELY possible.
3 Steps • Open a style file in the style editor. • Modify the file in the “key” areas and then save the file appropriately. • Create a new SWP project using that file, modifying the Front Matter to suit your needs.
Opening an Existing Style File • Open the style editor • Select a style such as Article (under the Articles type)
Modifying the file • Key Area I: Under the Elements menu, select Document Variable. • Delete all items. • Click “New Item” for each item you wish to see on your document. • Name the item and enter some sample text in the Default Value field. • Enter a tag label, followed by a colon “:”. • Check the Front Matter checkbox.
Modifying the file contd… • Key Area II:Under the Elements menu, select Display Element. • Delete all items. • Add a new item for every item you added in the Document Variable menu. Name the items as you did in the DV menu, using all caps this time. • In the Components box, type the name of the item in the DV menu to which this item corresponds. • Click the Paragraph box to specify that item’s spacing and justification. • Specify the font and color for that item.
Modifying the file contd… • Key Area III:Under the Elements menu, select Rule. • Specify a new Rule type. I used “Sig” as name. • Make sure the length is adequate those whose signatures are large! • Set the line thickness. I used 0.4pt.
Modifying the file contd… • Key Area IV:Under the Parts menu, select Exceptional Page. • Add a New Item by clicking the New Item button. • Make all settings identical to mine. Options are… • The Space{} settings • The exact order of the items (TITLE, AUTHOR, etc.) • The SW TagName • Use ALL CAPS (as in the Display Element page) when specifying content.
Modifying the file contd… • Key Area V:Under the Parts menu, select Shell File. • Enter all desired content as I have done here.
Save the file… • “Save As” as you would in any other Microsoft Windows Application. • I didn’t change the directory. You may rename the file (the part between the ‘\’ and the ‘.sty’ in the top text entry field) and change the description. • Make sure the bottom most checkboxes are checked. • If you’re like me and you have Data Demons living in your PC, I’d do this frequently during the course of your modifications (unless you enjoy making repetitive modifications
Using your file… • Choose New from the File menu in SWP. • Choose the Style Editor Shell Directory. • Choose the file you saved. Click OK.
Filling in the blanks… • Under the Typeset menu, choose Front Matter. • Enter the appropriate information. DO NOT modify any of the tags (blue-background text). • For a second Address line click in the middle of the Address line, press the END key, and then press Enter.
Typeset PDF or DVI preview… • Typeset your document in the normal manner. • Look at your results
