  4. Romans 1:16 • “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”

  5. ROMANS 1:17 • “For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

  6. 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation • OCTOBER 31, 1517 Marin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany, to challenge the theology and practice of indulgences.

  7. The Diet (church council)of Worms,April 1521. • Martin Luther was called before the emperor, Charles V and representatives of the Pope to give an account of his faith. • Luther was ready to proclaim the truth and enter into debate, but…

  8. Luther is told hemust recant or else… • “Unless I am convicted by Scriptures and plain reason—I do not accept the authority of Popes and Councils, for they have contradicted each other. I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scriptures, which is my basis; my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot, and I will not, recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.”

An edict was issued • The pope excommunicated Luther, • Declared him to be a heretic, • All were ordered to refuse Luther hospitality, lodging, food, or drink; • He was to be taken prisoner (in a similar situation John Hus, a Czech, had been burned at the stake in 1415), • All were prohibited from printing, buying, or selling Luther’s writings, • They were authorized to seize all property from Luther and all of his friends.

But The edictwas never enforced! • A powerful elector, Frederick of Saxony, hid Luther in the Wartburg Castle for 9 months, during which time… • Luther wrote a dozen books, • He translated the whole New Testament from Greek into German! • In later years he completed the Old Testament as well.

  11. 5 Distinctives of the protestant reformation • 1. Justification by faith alone.

  12. 1. Justification by faith alone. • Luther was totally frustrated in his quest for peace with God until he rediscovered this truth. • It was hidden and nearly lost in all the medieval exaggerations, errors, and distortions, but it was in the Bible all along.

  13. ROMANS 1:17 • “For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

  14. Galatians 3:11 • “Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”

  15. Hebrews 10:38 • “But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.” • Hebrews 11 follows---the great hall of the faithful.

  16. Habakkuk 2:4 • “…But the righteous will live by his faith…”

  17. 2. The priesthood of all believers. • Luther maintained that religious work is no more sacred in the sight of God than that of a farmer in his fields or a woman in her household duties. • A born-again believer is told to come boldly to the throne of grace, not to go through a priest.

  18. Hebrews 4:14-16 • “We have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…” • “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

  19. 1 Peter 2:9 • “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

  20. 3. The authority of the Word of God as contained in the Bible.

  21. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 • “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

  22. 4. The right and duty of every Christian to read and interpret the Bible for himself.

  23. Joshua 1:8 • “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

  24. Rev. 1:3 • “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy…”

  25. 5. The primacy of the Gospel. • In all of the sweeping changes taking place the central importance of preaching the Gospel was maintained.

  26. Mark 16:15 • “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

  27. The 5 Solas • 1. SOLA FIDE---By faith alone • 2. SOLA SCRIPTURA---by Scripture alone • 3. SOLUS CHRISTUS---through Christ alone • 4. SOLA GRATIA---by grace alone • 5. SOLI DEO GLORIA---glory to God alone

  28. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. For example; • John Wycliffe in England (1380’s). • John Hus, a Czech in Bohemia who proclaimed much the same message as Wycliffe, and Luther a century later. He was burned at the stake (in 1415) for challenging the RCC. • Martin Luther (1500’s). • The Pilgrims (1600’s).
