Interviewee Background • Carrie • A resident of Apostolic Towers • In her 80’s • Married twice, widowed twice, adult son and daughter • Born in PA, went to school in NC • Moved to Baltimore to live with her aunt at age 16 • Lived at Monument and Caroline • Worked at Hopkins in several jobs • Adolescent pregnancy program
Food System- Past Adolescence- in North Carolina • Fresh produce: Grandmother had a garden with string beans, greens • Fresh meat: Kill the chickens in backyard, clean them, and cook them Early Adulthood- in Maryland • Aunt would shop for foods, prepare meals • Baltimore food system: • Grocery store on Monument Street- could buy food on credit • Butcher shop- could bring animal there to be slaughtered or could buy different cuts of meat there • Bakery- used to be a variety of them in the neighborhood • Belair Market and Northeast Market- lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats • Ate meals at home with family • Remembers eating a lot of cooked vegetables, boiled and baked meats
Food System- Present Changes • Belair Market- now closed • Northeast Market- mostly prepared foods • Corner stores no longer carry produce selection • Supermarkets moved “out to the malls” along with other businesses • Food is expensive Adaptations • Transportation to supermarkets- her son or daughter take her on shopping trips or shop for her • Food truck to Apostolic Towers on Saturday mornings • Truck has fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, milk for purchase • Will deliver to residents who cannot go down to the truck • Carrie still cooks for herself in her apartment, cooks for the community parties, and sometimes gives extra prepared food to other residents who have limited incomes
Health in current food system • Carrie shares her knowledge, is a role model • Trained in nursing • Eats healthfully, cooks for herself, taught her children how to cook • Diabetes: Helps out with diabetes nutrition classes at the wellness center • Has had diabetes for 25 years with complications to her eyes • Ways that people can improve health: • Eat baked foods, eat fruits and vegetables • Cook for themselves • Read labels • Will use our gift card to buy healthy refreshments for an upcoming group meeting
