PRO Center Reporting Options Eric Roth
Reporting Solution Types • Stand-alone server based • Sql Server Reporting Services (SSRS) • Crystal Reports • Integrated .Net • SSRS local mode • DevExpressXtraReports • Telerik Reporting • ActiveReports • Custom
SSRS • Cost: Free with Sql Server • Pros: • In-house experience • Support • Good tooling and a lot of functionality • Cons: • Heavy on Admin (Manage another server config) with permissions. • No MVC viewer support would need to use WebForms or Silverlight • No web based designer for customizations. Uses a click-once application so end user would need permissions on there machine to use this tool.
Crystal Reports Cost: $495 Pros: • Support Cons: • A lot of negative posts on developer forums. • Heavy on Admin (Manage another server config) with permissions. • No MVC viewer support would need to use WebForms • No web based designer for customizations. Hard to find any documentation on any good End-user Designing functionality.
DevExpressXtraReports Cost: $599.99 per developer, no redistribution costs or per server costs. Pros: • Built for .Net, easy integration • Good tooling and a lot of functionality • MVC report viewer • Silverlight end user report designer Cons: • Not Free • Need to learn another tool • Need Silverlight if want an end user web based designer (they also have a desktop application for end user designer) • Figure out management/report access
Telerik Reporting Cost: $599.99 per developer, no redistribution costs or per server costs. Pros: • Built for .Net, easy integration • Good tooling and a lot of functionality • MVC report viewer (Beta stages) Cons: • Not Free • Need to learn another tool • Must download a stand alone desktop application to do report customization • Figure out management/report access
ActiveReports Cost: $1,599.99 Pro/$799 standard per developer, no redistribution costs or per server costs. We will probably need PRO Pros: • Built for .Net, easy integration • Good tooling and a lot of functionality • MVC report viewer • Seems to have most flexible report layouts Cons: • Not Free, most expensive • Need to learn another tool • Must download a stand alone desktop application to do report customization • Figure out management/report access
SSRS Local Mode Cost: Free • Pros: • In-house experience • Good tooling and a lot of functionality • Don’t need full SSRS server • Cons: • No MVC viewer support would need to use WebForms • Would need to build our own End-User designer.
Custom Cost: Free, but more startup costs for development work. (possible cost if deciding to not use free HTML to PDF converter) Build reports in HTML5/CSS3 and use tool for converting HTML to PDF. Pros: • Full control • Flexibility in report format/layout • Can easily build fully customizable web based designer for customization. Cons: • Initial development time could be longer, more risk. • Need to manually code any needed export format support • Figure out management/report access
