Process Appointment Pre Conference Observation Script, Exact language / video Label the Script (TPE): elements of effective instruction
Appointment • Consider the objective of early conferences – you want to see the best shot. • Limit the range of times to select: “I need to observe a reading lesson either Tuesday or Wednesday…” • New teachers will over-plan (you might want to help plan the lesson). • Be on time.
Pre Conference • What is the expected student outcome of today’s lesson? • What have the students done to show you they are ready for this lesson? • How will you check for understanding on the part of every learner? • What else do you want me to know about today’s lesson? • What questions can I help you answer?
Observation • Make sure there is permission to video. • If not, just record the teacher. • Sit where you can see the teacher and students. Move around as needed. • Record about 10 minutes of the lesson.
Label the Events • Identify the presence of the elements of effective instruction (TPEs) Label them when viewing the tape. • Look for Cause and Effect relationships: “When you _______ , this happened_____” • Begin to identify what you want to reinforce and what you want the teacher to extend.

Results • How will you know? • Commitment to try new idea • Think of ways to assess the effectiveness of your conference by viewing further student work: “When you teach the lesson tomorrow, please stop by and show me how the students did.”
