Leonardo daVinci • 1452-1519 • Born in present day Florence, Italy • Characterized as an archetype of the “Renaissance Man” • Painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, botonistand writer • Apprenticed at age 14 to di Cioni, the finest painter in Italy • Painted and invented until his death in 1519, major accomplishments being the Mona Lisa, Last Supper, several major scientific discoveries, and several inventions • Died in France in 1519

General Information • Sometimes referred to as “Painting of Lisa Gherardi” • Revered as one of daVinci’s best works, and certainly the most famous one. • The subject is not actually formally identified. Some suspect it is actually Lisa Gherardi, while others believe it is his mother.’ • Depicts a woman sitting in front of a winding landscape. • Displayed currently in the Louvre in Paris, France.

Analysis • The Mona Lisa is renowned for her sly, shy half-smile that makes her very enigmatic and mysterious. • One of the first recorded usages of aerial view on a portrait. • Pyramid shape highlights underlying circles and spheres. • Color contrast in the Mona Lisa contours and is credited with achieving the subject’s ambiguous expression. • Not globally recognized as beautiful.
