Life in the Massachusetts Bay Colony As a Puritan, you were required to attend all church services. Attendance at Sunday church services was compulsory. Punishments for infractions were harsh. If a Puritan did not go to church…that Puritan had no right to vote on any aspect in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The “New England Way” of a Puritan was a belief that you should work hard, be honest, and always be a good person • Everyone must go to school! Education is mandatory, because every Puritan is expected to be able to read the bible! • In the colony, leisure time was frowned upon. Everyone was expected to work from sunrise to sunset. • This is not to say there were no good times in this colony. There were celebrations for weddings, barn raisings and town meetings.

In 1732, James Oglethorpe was given a charter from King George II to create a new colony which he would name Georgia. Located between South Carolina and Florida, Georgia had two main purposes: To serve as a place where debtors in prison could go to start anew. It served as a barrier against invasion from the Spanish colonies in Florida. Georgia’s population included former debtors, impoverished British craftspeople, religious refugees from Germany and Switzerland. By 1770, nearly half of the population was made of enslaved Africans. 6. Georgia Colony
Debtors Prisons in England “ It’s disgraceful that English nobles are forced into debtors prisons with everyone else! I propose a new plan where nobles could have a fresh start in the New World!”
