Supporting Detail (SD) • Relates to the main idea • Develops the topic sentence • Give details • Provide examples • Tell about an incident
Supporting Detail (SD) • Organized in a logical order • Chronological (time) • Sequence (order) • Importance(general specific or specific general) • Relevance (most to least)
Supporting Detail (SD) • Two types • Concrete detail (CD): specific examples • Commentary (CM): explanation of examples & how they relate to topic sentence
Transition Words • Words or phrases that show the relationshipbetween sentences in a paragraph • Link sentences related to one topic Examples: however in fact similarly first in contrast therefore
Transition Sentences • Connect sentences within a paragraph --OR-- • Appear at the end of a paragraph to move onto the next topic
Closing/Summary Statement • Restate the topic sentence in different words. • A concluding sentenceclinches the point made in the paragraph. • It summarizesthe paragraph and provides closure.
