  2. Causes • Caused at birth • It is birth defect with visible separation between the top or lower part of the lip.

  3. Symptoms • soft tissue that covers the gap in the roof of the mouth.

  4. Prevention • Try to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol or taking certain medications during pregnancy.

  5. Treatment • Bilateral cleft lip repair and kindergarten rhinoplasty (nose surgery), non-surgical treatment- a prosthetic appliance applied to block the opening.

  6. FYI • Cleft lip and/or palate make up the most common birth defect in the United States. One out of every 700 newborns in the USA is affected by cleft lip and/or palate.
