Conflict Analysis - Archie Costello Although Archie Costello is the main antagonist of Jerry Renault, Archie also finds himself in conflict with many other characters as well. At the beginning of Chapter 27, Archie’s leadership role as the Vigil’s assigner is challenged by the Vigil’s president, Carter, who is frustrated with Archie’s passive response to Jerry’s defiance of a Vigil assignment. Even though Jerry initially went along with the Vigil assignment of not selling chocolates for ten days, he decided to not sell the candy after the ten day period ended. Unfortunately for Jerry, other student’s began to follow his example and the sales of chocolate dramatically decreased. News of Jerry’s defiance spread among the students. At the beginning of Chapter 27, Archie selects Frankie Rollo for an assignment. However, this selection backfires on Archie when Rollo brazenly mocks the Vigils by taunting them with, “I’m not a scared kid who pees his pants because the big bad Vigils call him to a meeting. Hell, you guys can’t even scare a punk freshman into selling a few lousy chocolates…” (180) At this point, Carter viciously attacked Rollo knowing that Archie opposes physical violence.
Conflict Analysis - Archie Costello Carter then took control of the meeting after commanding Archie to “sit down.” Archie recognized the command in Carter’s voice, and he realized that the Vigilssupported Carter. Archie realized that this wasn’t the time to challenge Carter. Carter further captured Archie’s attention by declaring, “We’ve arrived at the moment of truth, Archie, and this is how I read it – tell me if I’m wrong. When a gross creep like Rollo comes in here and challenges the Vigils, then there’s something wrong. Very wrong. We can’t afford to have guys like Rollo screwing around with us. The word will spread and the Vigils will fall apart. Now, I said that something is very wrong. And I’ll tell you who is wrong. We are.” (182) Carter followed these comments by saying that they were wrong for allowing their name to become connected with the chocolate sale. Then, Carter turned to Archie and announced, “Okay, Archie, you’re the brains of the outfit. And you also got us into this mess. Where do we go from here?” (184) During the time that Carter dominated the meeting, Archie furiously thought of solutions to the Vigils problem and Carter’s challenge to his authority. Then coolly in response to Carter’s taunt, Archie declared, “we’re going to make selling chocolates the thing to do. And the Vigils will come out on top as usual. The school will love us for it – getting rid of their chocolates. We’ll be able to write our own ticket with Leon and the brothers. Why do you think I pledged support to Leon in the first place?” (186)
Conflict Analysis - Archie Costello With this declaration and Archie’s explanation of his plan, Archie once again captured the full attention and respect of the Vigils. For now, Archie was able to avert Carter’s threats. Despite Carter’s obvious mistrust of Archie, even he had to admit that Archie almost always found a way to allow the Vigils to exert their influence on the school. In the end, the chocolate sale was a success: Archie and the Vigils were able to exert their authority over the rest of the students, the Vigils and Archie exacted revenge on Jerry Renault, and they escaped without any punishment with the aid of their new ally – Brother Leon.
