What is Stress? • Stress: The body and mind’s response to a demand • Stress is something you can FEELphysically AND/OR mentally • Examples: • Asking someone on a date: You feel your heart race, palms sweat • Watching the final seconds of a football game: Your mind is racing, heart pounding, palms sweat
Stressors • Any situation that puts a demand on the body or mind • Examples: • Environmental: Pollution, poverty, crowding • Biological: Illness, Injury • Thinking: Mental challenges, taking a test • Behavioral: not enough sleep, drug use • Life changing: Marriage, death
Stress vs. Stressor? • Stress is the FEELING you get from the STRESSOR, or situation • Example: The act of asking someone out on a date is a STRESSOR, the situation. Your palms sweating and heart racing is the STRESS, or body’s reaction to asking someone on a date.
Fight or Flight Response • When your body provides you with energy, reflexes, and strength so you can respond to a stressor, or situation. • Result? Your body releases EPINEPHRINE, or adrenaline, when you are in a fight or flight situation. Your: • Breathing speeds up • Heart beats faster • Muscles tense up • Pupils in eyes get wider

Positive vs. Negative Stress • There are two types of stress: • Eustress: Positive stress that energizes one and helps you reach a goal • Distress: Negative stress that can make a person sick or keep from reaching a goal
Examples • Examples of eustress: Studying, winning a competition, roller coaster rides • Examples of distress: death of loved one, chronic pain, lack of meaningful friendships, anxiety, depression
Distress can be dangerous! • When not taken care of, distress can lead to: • Compromised immune system • Illness • DEATH!!!!!
