Problems with identification • 1 So many species! - and many similar species • 2 Moths tend to become “worn” with time • Some species are very variable
Identification: Points to remember • Many species are habitat-specific (e.g. sandhills only, saltmarsh, deciduous woodland, bogs & heaths • Check the time of year given for the species • Check it’s actually on the Irish list!

Why study Moths? • 1. Many species are very attractive • 2. Relatively easy to identify many species (compared with other groups!) • 3. Indicators of habitat – particularly useful for assessing habitat • 4. There is now an active network of recorders exchanging information and helping with identification
