  2. DADT Won’t Go Away Quickly STORY HIGHLIGHTS • No one in the Pentagon seems to know how long it will take to enact repeal • Gay service members say repeal makes them more likely to stay in the military

  3. Census: 308.7 million people live here Story Highlights • The country grew 9.7% over the last decade, according to Census Director Robert Groves, who announced the results of the 2010 Census December 21. • It was the slowest growth rate since the Depression of the 1930s.

Rape victims fear being jailed in Mauritania STORY HIGHLIGHTS • Rights groups working to get a law defining rape in Mauritania • Currently rape victims can be jailed for having sex outside marriage • Victims also pressured by social stigma attached to rape • One woman tells CNN: Mauritania is no place for rape victims like me

Monkeys and Meth Don’t Mix - Weekly “Not too bright Criminal” • William Alan Givan (pictured) of Hawkins County, TN was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine. There's certainly nothing uncommon about that. What was slightly strange though was that the meth lab was guarded by aggressive pet monkeys!

Police 'actively pursuing' second person in Tucson shooting STORY HIGHLIGHTS • Investigators are pursuing a second suspect • A congressional aide, a federal judge, a nine-year old and three others died in shooting outside supermarket • U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was seriously wounded along with 11 others • A suspect is in custody; law enforcement sources identify him as Jared Lee Loughner Jared Loughner Arizona shooting suspect Jared Loughner charged with murder, attempted murder and attempting to kill member of Congress.

World hails vote on independence in Southern Sudan STORY HIGHLIGHTS • Northerners are mostly Arab and Muslim, while southerners are mostly black Africans and animist/Christian • Southerners could usher in the world's newest nation • About 2 million people – mostly from the south – died from 1983 to 2005 during a war between the two sides
