The Longest River • The Severn divides England and Wales. • The River Severn is 354km long and is therefore the longest river in the United Kingdom. • About 1million years ago before the last Ice Age the river travelled North and entered the Irish Sea near where the Mersey does today.
The source of The River Severn is in Bryn-Cras in the Cambrian Mountains in Wales. At an altitude of 610m. During the first 20km of its journey the river falls 457m! Source

There are many towns alongside the River Severn including: Llanidloes Welshpool Shrewsbury Ironbridge Worcester Tewkesbury Gloucester Cardiff Weston- super-mare Towns on the river Many towns grew up alongside the River Severn mainly because they were good places to build a bridge across the river.
