  1. Martin Luther king jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience.

Martin Luther King Jr. childhood Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 at the family home in Atlanta, Georgia.  He lived with his parents, Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King, as well as his grandparents and his two siblings, Christine and Alfred Daniel Williams King. At the age of five, Martin Luther King Jr. began school at YongerStreet Elementary School in Atlanta.  This, however, was before the legal school entrance age of six; thus, Martin was not allowed to continue his education until he turned six years old.  Following his education at YongerStreet Elementary School, he attended David T. Howard Elementary School.  He also attended the Atlanta University Laboratory School and Booker T. Washington High School.  He scored so high on his college entrance exam at Booker High School that he did not formally finish high school, he went on to college in his junior year of high school

  3. His Family • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott exchanged vows on June 18, 1953. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. on the lawn of Coretta's parents home in Marion, Alabama. MLK and Coretta became parents to four children: Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertan

  4. Martin Luther King Jr. Death • At 6:01 p.m. on April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was hit by a sniper's bullet. King had been standing on the balcony in front of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, when, without warning, he was shot. The .30-caliber rifle bullet entered King's right cheek, traveled through his neck, and finally stopped at his shoulder blade. King was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. • Violence and controversy followed. In outrage of the murder, many blacks took to the streets across the United States in a massive wave of riots. The FBI investigated the crime, but many believed them partially or fully responsible for the assassination. An escaped convict by the name of James Earl Ray was arrested, but many people, including some of Martin Luther King Jr.'s own family, believe he was innocent.
