Functions of the Blood • Helps fight disease • Regulates Body Temperature • Carries special chemical messengers • Carries needed substances to the cells • Carries waste products away from cells
Helps Fight Disease • Blood Clots • White blood cells attack bacteria and viruses
Regulates Body Temperature • Called Thermoregulation
Carries Special Messengers • Carry Hormones that regulate glucose levels • For example: insulin
Carries Needed Substances to the Cells • Carries Oxygen from lungs to the cells • Carries glucose needed to produce energy • Carries nutrients needed for cell and tissue growth and repair
Carries waste Products Away from Cells • Takes Carbon dioxide away from cells to the lungs • Takes metabolic wastes (waste the cell produces after cellular respiration) to the kidneys to be filtered
Blood Type • Humans have 4 main blood types: • Blood type A • Blood Type AB • Blood type B • Blood type O
Blood Type is determined by proteins on your red blood cells called ANTIGENS • If you have antigen A on your red blood cell you have blood type A • If you have antigen B on your red blood cell you have blood type B • If you have both antigen A and B on your red blood cell you have blood type AB • If you do not have any antigens on your red blood cells you have blood type O
If you receive blood it must be your type! • If you receive blood that contains an antigen that you do not have on your red blood cell your body will attack it! • Your body thinks it is an invader • If your body starts attacking blood cells it is very serious!!
Antibodies • If you receive another blood type your body will produce antibodies to destroy the invader • Antibodies are also a protein that work to destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses and antigens that don’t belong in the body
Blood type A will produce antibodies against Blood type B • Blood type B will produce antibodies against Blood type A • Blood type AB will not produce any antibodies • Blood type O will produce both A and B antibodies
Universal donors and recipients • Which blood type can donate to anyone and not have any harmful antibodies produced? • Which blood type can receive from anyone without any harmful antibodies being produced?
How do you get your blood type? • Genetics!!!
RH factor + or -? • rH is yet another protein that your blood cell either has or does not have • If you have it you are rH+ • If you don’t you are rH- • An rH + cannot give to an rH - • An rH – can give to an rH+
