  1. Fungus: Chytridomycota and Imperfect Fungi By: Chris Oriente and Korah Sabu

  2. Fungal Spores • Fungal spores are reproductive bodies which can be asexual or sexual. • Spores are one way to help identify the fungus. • Examples: • Sporangiospores (asexual) • Zygospores (sexual)

  3. Hyphae • Hyphae also help identify the fungi. • Hyphae are long threadlike cells that make up the mold of the fungus. • Types: • Septate is when a hyphae is divided into segments by cross walls. • Hyphae are also classified by their function like vegetative hyphae.

  4. Example

  5. Chytridomycota Spores • Zoospores • Special flagellated spores • Also called gametes

  6. Chytridomycota

  7. Chytridomycota Hyphae • Chytridomycota do not form hyphae or yeast cells.

  8. Chytrids • Unusual and old fungus from the phyla Chytridomycota are chytrids. • Their morphology goes from single to colonies.

  9. Lifestyle • Sapbrobic which are organisms that get their nutrients from dead matter. • They are free-living in soil. • Some live in water. • Also they can live in decaying matter.

  10. Role In Life • Some are parasites on animals and plants. • No known disease made from this fungus. • Killed a large amount of frogs.

  11. Effect On Frogs • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RFK9KNC8FA (0:00-1:30)

  12. Imperfect Fungi • Most asexual fungi are Imperfect Fungi. • They are called imperfect because they lack a sexual state. • Most imperfect fungi turn into Ascomycota • Examples • Penicillium chrysogenum • Aspergillus oryzae

  13. Spores • A lot of fungus were classified in Fungi Imperfect until a sexual spore was found. • This is because Imperfect Fungi only give asexual spores. • The classification is so broad, the specific spore varies.

  14. Hyphae • The hyphae varies with the species. • Example • Some fungi from the genus Penicillium have a septate and colorless hyphae.

  15. Lifestyle • Asexual. • Heterotrophic where they get their nutrients from organic matter.

  16. Role In Life • Some fungi from Penicilliumis used for antibiotics. • Some cause athlete’s foot. • Others cause yeast infections. • Mycoses which is fungal infections.

  17. Uses • Penicillium roqueforti is one of the most important Imperfect Fungi. • It is used to make blue cheese.
