Introduction • Advocacy work falls into the ‘Build External Relationships’ role of the Board • Definition: The art and science of using personal and professional relationships and strategic partnerships to influence process and policy; and to achieve success in initiatives, projects and priorities that contribute to the attainment of the ends of the institution.

  4. Advice to Boards in Advocacy Planning • Be objective Stewards • Seek the ‘big picture’, the best interests of the long-term welfare of the institution • Rise above parochial interests, political affiliations and personal biases • Be committed to the institution (i.e. protect and defend)

  5. Board’s Important Relationships • Community(s) • Organizations • Learners • Alumni • Business and Industry • Local, provincial and federal government representatives • Other?

  6. Considerations • Focus and Partnerships are critical to effective Building External Relationships • Deal with priorities which are urgent and important • Advocacy is a body contact sport • Board’s Governance Role includes: (1) focus, (2) planning, (3) strategy, (4) policy development, (5) monitor performance • Board’s Tactical Role: (1) Provision of your personal and professional ‘relationship web’

  7. Advocacy Questions for the Board • How does the idea support the Institution’s vision and outcomes? Why are we doing this? • Who is the target of our advocacy efforts? Timing? Where will this AE (i.e. advocacy effort) occur? • What is the message? Who is the messenger? • What are the idea’s benefits? Features? • What support(s) is needed from administration? Follow-up?
