Overview • The Polar Regions are cold places • The Arctic is ice on an ocean • Their are several different kinds of penguins • The continent of Antarctica lies at the south pole and is permanently covered in a thick shield of ice • At the south pole, ice covers the land and forms cliffs and glaciers • As the sea freezes, a greasy film appears to covers the water

  3. Polar Animals • Polar bears • Arctic Fox • Penguin • Teal • Black- Brewed Albatross • Seals • Whales

  4. Polar People • Eskimos/Inuit live in Alaska/Greenland • Scientists live in Antarctica to study things • Nomads live in the Arctic. They live in plantations. • The Sami people live in Scandinavia and they used to keep herds of reindeer in order to survive • The first person to reach the south pole, was Roald Amundsen • The Antarctic is uninhabited but scientists spend time there doing research • The Sami used reindeer to carry loads and pull sleighs

Interesting Facts • Caribou lose their antlers and then they grow new ones, once a year • Caribou can stretch 186 miles when they migrate in lines • Pack ice near Antarctica can be as thick as 10 feet in the winter • Scientists can track polar bears with a radio collar • An emperor penguin is 39 inches tall • Sperm whale pods often help each other • Arctic Fur Seals were endangered in the 1950s.There were only a few hundred left of them from hunting
