Board of County Commissioner’s Employee Service Awards • Today’s honorees are recognized for outstanding service and dedication
William R. Thomas 25 Years • Bill was born and raised in Orlando and graduated from Evans High School and the University of Central Florida. • He joined Orange County in 1985 at Parks and Recreation. • Bill has been promoted several times and is currently a Planner III. • He helped bring over $21 million in recreational trail and park grants to the County and helped initiate the West Orange Trail Project.
Bill Thomas - 25 Years • Bill has served as Orange County’s representative on the MPO Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee since 1991. • He has also served as the local government representative on the Florida Greenways and Trails Council. • Bill has three children and two grandchildren. • In his spare time, he enjoys running, sailing, photography and ballroom dancing. *
Donald L. Pittman - 20 Years • Don was born in Philadelphia, and has lived in Washington, D.C. and Alaska. • He graduated from Edgewater High School, UCF and Rollins College. • Don joined Orange County in 1990 to work at Court Alternatives. • He is a founding member of the Florida Association of Community Corrections and the 1st recipient of the FACC President’s Award.
Donald Pittman - 20 Years • Don has served as Corrections Administrative Supervisor for all 20 years with the County. • He has been married to Patsy for 39 years and they have two children: Jessica, 30; and Tim, 26; along with one grandchild: Henry, 2 and one more on the way. • Don loves reading, golfing, and music. • He volunteers with the Hope and Help Center Advisory Board, Juvenile Detention Center Community Advisory Board, Everest University Community Advisory Board and the Orange County Domestic Violence Task Force. *
Ivette M. Garcia 25 Years • Ivette has attended Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Mid- Florida Tech, Blackstone School of Law and Florida Metropolitan University. • Ivette was hired as a Control Desk Monitor at Corrections in 1985. Two years later she was accepted into the Corrections Academy.
Ivette Garcia- 25 Years • Ivette started at Central Booking and has worked at the Main Facility, with the Road Crew, at Whitcomb, the Booking Release Center and Main Control. • She has been promoted to Field Training Officer Investigator, Corporal and Sergeant. She’s a member of the Security Threat Group. • Ivette has received numerous awards and certificates, including: Community Service Award, Teamwork Award for the ACA Accreditation and Outstanding Service. *
Mark A. Zwolinski - 25 Years • Mark was born in Baton Rouge, LA and moved to Central Florida in 1983. • He graduated from George S. Parker High School in Janesville, WI and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. • Mark was hired in 1985 to work at Corrections Administrative Services - Food Services Division and helped to transition this unit to a privatized service.
Mark Zwolinski - 25 Years • Mark has worked on many projects including: * The Departmental Therapeutic Diet Manual * Institutional Laundry Machine Installation Project * Warehouse Relocation * Kitchen Oven Removal Project * Hurricane and Preparedness Operational Readiness • He has earned numerous awards: Distinguished Service, Meritorious Service, Award of Excellence, Scholastic Achievement and Several Teamwork Awards. • Mark is proud to say that he has been instrumental in the serving of more than 72 million meals. • He has been married to Judith for 29 years and they have two children: Melissa, 28; and Jennifer, 25. • In his spare time, Mark enjoys renovations, reading, movies, target shooting, woodworking and gardening. *
Sharon L. White - 20 Years • Sharon was born and raised in Orlando. She’s a graduate of Jones High School and the University of Phoenix. • She is also a Navy veteran. • Sharon was hired initially to work with District 9 Medical Examiner Office. • She has also worked with Capital Projects and Facilities Management. • Sharon created, edited and published the first Facilities Management Newsletter.
Sharon White – 20 Years • Sharon has worked with the Orange County Social Committee, numerous United Way Campaigns, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and on the Muscular Dystrophy Jail/Bail Fundraiser. • She lost her oldest daughter to cancer in 2003. Her youngest daughter will graduate next year (2011). • Sharon’s hobbies include: writing, exercising, reading and crafting. • She currently volunteers with the Kids Beating Cancer bone marrow donor drives along with the American Cancer Society and Jones High School Alumni Events. *
Cheryl Renee King 20 Years • Cheryl was born and raised in Orlando. She’s a graduate of Jones High School, Valencia Community College, Florida A&M University and Florida Gulf Coast University. • She was hired in 1990 to work as a Senior Teacher Assistant at Head Start. • Cheryl was promoted to Social Worker in 1996.
Cheryl King – 20 Years • Cheryl has worked on the “Relay for Life” fundraiser, “Make a Difference Day” and Back to School fairs. • She has volunteered with the Pyramid Club, the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts of America, and as a Sunday School Teacher. • She has three children, and one granddaughter: Sariyah. • In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, and working with children. *
Virginia W. Herring 30 Years • Virginia was born in Bethesda, MD and moved around quite a bit as a military dependent. • Her family finally settled in Winter Park in 1967. • Virginia joined Orange County in 1980 at Head Start. • She has also worked with the Pro-Pet Program, commodities distribution, energy assistance program, Victory Over Drugs and with the IRS to help people navigate the Earned Income Credit process.
Virginia Herring – 30 Years • Virginia was a vital part of the Hurricane Andrew Recovery team helping emergency responders. • She has a daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren. • Virginia is active with the New Covenant Perfecting Ministries Church in Apopka, where she has learned what it means to live life to the fullest. *
Margaret A. Hamilton 30 Years • Margaret was born in Orlando and lived in New York until returning to Orlando in 1980. • She graduated from Jones High School and Columbia College. • Margaret is a licensed minister and is pursuing a degree in Theology at LOD International Bible College. • In 1980, she came to work at Orange County’s Head Start Program.
Margaret Hamilton – 30 Years • Margaret was the Department’s Employee of the Year in2006. • She was Acting Center Manager at Lila Mitchell Community Center and was promoted to Social Worker in 2008. • Margaret has worked with the Pro-Pet, LIHEAP, EHEAP, Weatherization, Frontline Outreach Community Christmas, Eastern Stars Community Outreach, Evans Youth Outreach and Christ School Programs. • She has been married to Wayne for 22 years and they have four children: Germane, Irvin, Richard and Shar-Dai (they lost their son Gregory). • They have two grandchildren: Jakari and Ahjah. • In her spare time, Margaret enjoys ministering, worshipping, traveling and shopping. *
David W. Sullivan 25 Years • David was born in Knoxville, TN and moved to Central Florida in 1972. • He graduated from Lyman High School, Seminole Community College and Columbia Southern University. • Dave is a certified Building and Roofing Contractor. • He started with Fire Rescue in 1985, was promoted to Engineer in 1995, Lieutenant in 2005 and Battalion Chief in 2008.
Dave Sullivan – 25 Years • Dave has received seven Unit Citations for outstanding service. • He is an Officer and Battalion Academy Instructor. • He has taught building construction classes as it relates to Fire Service. • Dave has been married to Barbara for 27 years and they have two daughters: Kelly and Sarah. • His hobbies include: Harley rides, boating, traveling and anything outdoors. *
James W. Gaut 30 Years • Jim was born in Whittier, CA, and moved to Central Florida in 1966. • He graduated from Bishop Moore High School. • Jim was hired by the Killarney Fire Control District in 1980 and has been promoted to Engineer, Paramedic, Flight-Medic, Lieutenant, EMS Supervisor and Battalion Chief. • He has participated in many program with Fire Rescue, including the mobile repeater program.
Jim Gaut – 30 Years • Jim has worked with the staff of many area high rise buildings to prepare them in the event of emergency. • He has also worked with the unified command project with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to coordinate a partnership during high risk incidents. • Jim is also a contributing editor to the IFSTA book on high-rise and multi-story building fire operations. • He has been married to Dayna for 19 years and they have one daughter: Christine. • In his spare time, Jim enjoys outdoor activities, swimming and boating. *
William Frank Burkholder 20 Years • Bill was born in Erie, PA and moved to Orlando in the ‘50’s. • He graduated from Evans High School and received his Engineering Degree from UCF. • In 1990, Bill came to work for Orange County in the Data Center’s GIS Section.
Bill Burkholder – 20 Years • Bill transferred to the Utilities Department and later to Public Works. He is currently in the Growth Management, GIS Division. • He has worked on converting and updating the County’s InfoMap system. • Bill is married to Diane and they enjoy spending time together. *
Roger Smith 20 Years • Roger was born and raised in Orlando. He graduated from Evans High School and attended Mid-Florida Tech and Valencia Community College. • He has been working in all aspects of traffic signals for 28 years including: signal cabinet building, trouble-shooting, repair, maintenance and installation. • He has certifications for advanced work zone safety, Fiber Optics Installer, Level 3 Traffic Signal Technician and Level 1 Traffic Signs & Markings.
Roger Smith – 20 Years • Roger has been promoted several times, from Supervisor to Signal Foreman, to Coordinator. • He helped to initiate the Intelligent Transportation System over the past 12 years that includes fiber optics and wireless signal communication. • Roger has been published in the Orange Spieland received numerous Innovation Fund Awards, including the Red Light Running program. • He is the “Speedy Mover” presenter for Traffic Operations at the Public Works Complex. • Roger has been married to Susan for 18 years and they’ve been licensed foster parents for two children over the past 10 years. • In his spare time, Roger enjoys all water sports and working on anything with an engine. *
Eric A. Peterson - 30 Years • Eric was born on Patrick Air Force Base and, as a military dependent, he lived in Alabama, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Ohio and finally Orlando in 1970. • He graduated from Boone High School and Valencia Community College. • Eric joined Orange County in Roads and Drainage working at the 3 Points Maintenance Unit as a Motor Vehicle Operator I working with a hand crew.
Eric Peterson – 30 Years • Eric has operated all types of equipment and eventually became an Equipment Operator. • He has also served as a Union Steward and was later elected Chief Union Steward and worked with the contract negotiation team for five years. • Eric was promoted in 1990 to Foreman III responsible for scheduling inmate road crews, trucks, transports and rolling excavators. • He has also assisted in the demolition of crack houses. • Eric was the Heavy Equipment Crew Foreman sent to Coral Gables for Hurricane Andrew relief. • He has received an Environmental Initiative Award for his 2001 work with biodegradable hydraulic oil. • In 1995 he was promoted to Contract Administrator. • He is married to Pamela and they are working to get their retirement home ready on the Ocklawaha River. *
Martin A. Palmer20 Years • Martin was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica and moved to Central Florida in 1980. • He graduated from Austin High in Jamaica. • Martin was hired by Public Works in 1990 to work with Roads and Drainage and transferred to Utilities in 2000. • He started as an Equipment Operator and was promoted to Painter.
Martin Palmer – 20 Years • Martin assisted with the Hurricane Charlie response team. • He has received two Merit Awards for outstanding performance. • Martin has four children: Mark, Jacqueline, Andrea and Stacey. • In his spare time, Martin enjoys soccer and cricket. He volunteers at the Church of God of Prophecy. *
