AIM:What are two types of Mechanical Waves? Vocabulary Longitudinal, transverse, crest, trough, compression, rarefaction
Quick Review! What is a wave? The transfer of energy caused by a disturbance or a vibration
What is a Mechanical Wave? Definition: a Wave which requires a medium Do Electromagnetic Wave require a medium. NO
There are three types of mechanical waves • Transverse * • Longitudinal * • Combinations or surface waves * We are going to study these two types today
DRAW THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK This is picture of a transverse wave
TRANSVERSE WAVES • EXAMPLE: “waves made with the rope” • EXAMPLE: “water waves” • DEMONSTRATE:When the wave moved in one direction, which way did the particles of the medium move? (Duck, Ribbon)
TRANSVERSE WAVES • DEFINITION: • The particles of the medium typically move perpendicular to the movement of the wave!

What is the other type of Mechanical Wave? • LONGITUTDINAL WAVES • “slinky waves” like the waves of a slinky (demonstrate) *** SHOW Transparency 58: Longitudinal Wave
LONGITUTDINAL WAVES • Definition: the particles of the medium move parallel – or in the same direction – as the “movement of the wave”
DEMONSTRATE WITH A SLINKY The area where the coils are compacted is called the COMPRESSION The area where the coils are spread out is called the RAREFACTION
After the compression rarefaction pass, the medium (the slinky) returns to normal.
The crest of a transverse wave is similar to the compression of a longitudinal wave
