Retiree News Update January 10, 2009 at the Challenger Club
Overview • Retiree Office Situation • Visa-free Entry to Korea • Medical/Dental Appointments at Osan • Tax Assistance • RAD Schedule • Drawings for Prizes • Participation
Retiree Office Situation • Military Personnel, Building 936 • Civilian Personnel took over former RAO • Desk was identified for RAO when I returned • Manpower took over that space • No idea of current plan • Other Location, Other Building • Not interested, RAO should be co-located with Personnel activities, but in a separate office
Visa-Free Entry • US granted 90-day visa free visits to verified Korean passport holders effective Nov 17 • On Nov 10, Korea announced visa-free entry to Korea for US passport holders effective Nov 17 • Visa-free visits to Korea up to 90 days • It can be used by Korea retirees who currently are using the C-3 visa for 90-day turnarounds
Hospital Appointments • Space available access for retirees and their families has opened a little more • Medical and Dental at full staffing • Medical call after 10am 784-3627, from off base call 661-3627 • Ask for appointment with Internal Medicine • Dental, call 784-2108, off base 661-2108
Tax Assistance • Most retirees can use the Tax Center • If you have an unusual problem, I can probably help • If you haven’t filed and need assistance to get right with the IRS, I can help • If you know of a widow using the Tax Center, suggest she visit my office instead • Part-timers don’t know the rules to apply • I end up preparing corrected returns for widows
If You’re Not Filing • The tax problem becomes mine because: • When a retiree dies, the widow comes to me • I file a tax return for year of retiree’s death • Widow starts receiving nasty mail from IRS • Turns out retiree decided he didn’t need to file • E.g., one retiree stopped filing in 1994, died in in 2007 (widow got a $124,000+ tax bill) and I’m still trying to get the old 1099’s to file the returns
RAD Schedule • Challenger Club bumped us from Dec to Jan because of schedule conflict • I propose the RAD schedule as a permanent change to Jan, Apr, Jul and Oct • VFW retiree members unable to participate due to a schedule conflict on 2nd Saturday • I propose we move the RAD (back) to 3rd Saturday • ANY OBJECTIONS????
Drawings for Prizes • Please thank Ron Holcomb, the Humphreys Credit Union Manager, for the AAFES gift cards • When you’re at the BX, please thank Ms. Yi, the Store Manager, for the other prizes on the table • Mike Connelly will conduct the drawings because I promised to take pictures for Ms. Yi to send to AAFES Hq in Dallas … and also that will go onto my web site
Participation • Retirees should get more involved in the community and a way to do it is coming • There’s a new Osan Retiree Council on the verge of being chartered • I’ve ask the Council Chairman for help in finding someone to take over the RAD • The Council Chairman, Mike Connelly, has volunteered to take over the task
And Finally • The Military Retiree Activities Office will be closed on: • Jan 19, Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday • Jan 26-27 Korean Lunar New Year • I will still be standing up here to give briefings from time to time, and I want to wish everyone And with that, I turn it over to Mike
