  2. Problems in Sham Shui Po • Air Pollution • Noise Pollution • Land Problem • Old Buildings • Lack of Open Area

  3. Air pollution • Pollutants mainly come from vehicles

  4. Noise pollution • Serious traffic congestion during rush hours • Factories near the residential area produce noise pollution

  5. Land Problems • Traffic congestion most likely happens during rush hours as roads in inner city are usually narrow and winding.

  6. Land Problems • Small shops are easily found on the ground floor of residential buildings Some food stalls on the street make the area very dirty, e.g. Yiu Tung Street.

  7. Land Problems • Buildings are too close together • The population density is very high

  8. Old Buildings • Worn-out buildings are easily found ∵ Lack of proper maintenance • Lots of people lived in one small flat • High building density lowers the living standard of the people • Illegal rooftops are found in the old buildings

  9. Lack Of Open Area • Inner city is usually lack of open space such as community facilities, parks and playground.

  10. What’s more ? • Mixed land use usually happens in inner city. This causes land use conflict. • Population density is high in inner city • Most people with low income live there • So, lack of comprehensive planning is one of the major reasons causing urban decay.

  11. To conclude, there are many problems in inner city affecting the living condition of people. We agree that solutions must be carried out to improve the living condition of the people living there. Policy such as urban renewal has been carried out by Hong Kong HousingSociety , Urban Renewal Authority and Hong Kong Housing Authority.

  12. Solutions • Urban renewal • Repair old buildings and provide more open space. • Build a buffer green park between industrial and residential areas . • Encourage people to take public transport in order to reduce air and noise pollution coming from private cars .
