WHAT IS SEXUAL ASSAULT? Most victims of sexual assault are assaulted by someone they know. Any nonconsensual physical contact of a sexual nature including touching, sexual intercourse, rape, attempted rape, and child molestation. WHAT IS DATE RAPE? Sexual assault that occurs in a dating or social situation by a date, friend or acquaintance. Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault.
CONSENT • Consent means that both people freely and willingly agree to engage in the activity by stating their mutual understanding and agreement. • A person who is drunk, drugged, unconscious or mentally disabled is not legally able to consent to sexual contact. • There are age limits on when a young person can legally consent to sexual activity. • In Texas, youth younger than 17 cannot consent to sexual activity with people who are more than 3 years older. Children under 14 cannot legally consent to sex.
PLAYING IT SAFE ACTIVITY • How serious is this situation? What if any risks could there be to you or others? • Has a situation like this ever happened to you or someone you know? (no names) • What did people do to help? Was it helpful? • Role-play what you would do? Consider a role for each person in your group.
INCREASING YOUR SAFETY • When going on a date, know who the person is, where you are going, and what you will be doing. • Don’t be alone with your date, go to public places. • Don’t meet alone with someone you met on the Internet. • Know your sexual limits and communicate them clearly to your partner. • Have access to a phone at all times. • Do not use or accept drugs or alcohol.
PREVENTING SEXUAL ASSAULT • Be responsible. Know the law. Know your sexual limits. Always respect your partner’s sexual limits. • Avoid situations and substances that may put you at risk of pressuring someone for sex. • Be a good friend. Never leave someone in a vulnerable situation, especially if they’ve been using alcohol or drugs. • Speak up or get help from an adult if you witness sexual harassment or are concerned about someone’s personal safety.
