It is required (by law) to hold a public hearing if a school district calendar change is being considered • This hearing is only the first step in gathering input • Additional input to be sought from parent and booster organizations over the next month • BOE recommendation / decision when ready (January or February) The Process…

  3. “Days to Hours” Legislation • Minimum School Year • 910 hours = 1 “year” for grades K - 6 (full-day Kdg) • 1001 hours = 1 “year” for grades 7 – 12 • Elimination of “Calamity Days” Legal Requirements (ORC 3313.48)

  4. WHS (7:40 a.m. – 2:34 p.m.) 6 hours 24 minutes daily • WMS (7:30 a.m. – 2:27 p.m.) 6 hours 17 minutes daily • WIS (8:55 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.) 6 hours daily • WPS (8:55 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.) 6 hours daily Our Daily Schedules

  5. WHS = 1165 hours (164 hours more than required) • WMS = 1138 hours (137 hours more than required) • WIS = 1092 hours (182 hours more than required) • WPS = 1092 hours (182 hours more than required) Total Minutes / Year

  6. Align end of first semester with winter break • Eliminate the two week “interruption” in the second grading period caused by winter break. High School exams would come prior to winter break. • Start school year earlier in August / end in late May • Maximize instructional time PRIOR to state testing • Provide additional instructional time for intervention due to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee prior to state testing • Maintain traditional “breaks” • Six District Compact alignment considerations • Align to local University semester breaks (eligibility of Post Secondary Enrollment Option students for athletics) • Meet minimum state legal requirements Calendar Considerations
