A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte shows members of each of the social classes participating in various park activities. It took Seurat two years to complete this 10-foot-wide painting, much of which he spent in the park sketching in preparation for the work (there are about 60 studies). It is now in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
