Biography • Georges Pierre Seurat was born on December 2, 1859 in Paris, France • His father, Chrysostome Seurat, was a legal official in La Villette. • He lived a secluded life as a pensioner in his house.in the Provence. • He would visit his family in Paris just once a week. Seurat’s mother, Ernestine Faivre, came from a middle-class Parisian family. • Seurat was introduced to painting by his uncle, Paul Haumonté-Faivre. He was an amateur painter himself. • In 1875 he started to attend a drawing class taught by the sculptor Justin Lequien at a night school. There he befriended Edmond Aman-Jean

Biography Continued • In 1878, Seurat joined the École des Beaux-Arts, together with Aman-Jean, and joined a very prestigious painting class • In 1889, he left the class and started his own studio with Aman-Jean and Ernest Laurent. • In November, his military service began. • In his free time he studied theories of color and vision. Also, he would draw. In his sketchbook there are numerous sketches of the sea, beaches and ships.

  4. Seurat’s role in the impressionist era Georges was able to alter the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-impressionism, and he is one of the icons of 19th century painting.

Compositional Style • Seurat spent his life studying color theories and the effects of different linear structures. • He developed the style of painting known as Pointillism. • He had 500 works of art of his own and he was proclaimed to be a master. • His magnificent pointillist pieces in make him the famous artist that he is today.

  6. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte • Who: Middle Class • What: Showing how they spent their leisure time • Where: A park, Seurat would go there and study colors and shadows • When: Afternoon, bright colors, bright sun

  7. Bathing at Asnieres • Who: Middle class, Bourgeois • Where: Asnieres, 5 miles from the center of Paris • When: Mid-day, Around noon • Why: To show how the middle class would now spend their free time.

  8. As a Result… Georges Seurat was one of the most brilliant painters of his time. He continued in many exhibitions and kept getting more and more famous until his death. On March 29, 1891 he unexpectedly died of an infection. Also, his son died shortly afterwards of the same infection.
