Fidel Castro – Historical Figure • Biography • Trained as Lawyer in Havana • Is a revolutionary who helped in the overthrow of several dictators, the most infamous of which being RafaelTrujillo in the DominicanRepublic, and FulgenciaBatista in Cuba. • Became the Prime Minister of Cuba after the Cuban Revolution, and placed it under a CommunistRegime in 1959. • Currently is still alive, but has given power to his brother, Raul. Santeria – Cultural Feature • Santeria • Has a major religious presence in Cuba. • Is a blend of Catholicism and traditional Yaruba/Local relgions. • After 1959, and especially in the 1970’s, the relationship between religion and government changed, with partial religious freedom. • Full religious freedom allowed in 1992 Right – Traditional figures in Santeria. Current Events Recent Oil Drilling Cuba has begun a drilling program to secure what they believe is 5 billion barrels of oil off of its coast. Effects/Importance: Cuba is a very independent country, and where they originally relied on Venezuelan oil, by claiming this oil for itself, it can lessen its dependence on foreign resources and become even more independent. Foreign Energy Dependence Cuban Oil Rig Property Reforms For the first time in years, Cuba has allowed its citizens to buy and sell property. Previous attempts at this has met with less than satisfactory results. Effects/Importance: When first allowed, housing prices sky rocketed and the complicated property laws allowed for a collapse in the housing market. With more recent reforms, it’s interesting to see how Cuban laws may be forced to become more liberal to simply allow success. Intense Liberal Law Reforms U.S. Embargo on Cuba Repealed Last year, the economic and political embargo on Cuba was lifted in an overwhelming United Nations vote. Effects/Importance: With the lifting of the embargo, Cuba has now been granted greater access to the rest of the world, perhaps comfortably for the first time in decades. Global Isolation from UN
