A lord (landowner) would divide their land to the lesser lords. • Those who received the land were called: • Vassal
The vassal would pledge service and loyalty to the greater lord.
The vassal would hire poor farmers who would work the land: • Serfs Serfs were not slaves. Serfs were in a condition referred to as unfree, but it was not slavery. Rather serfs were bound to the soil; they were legally attached to the land, the manors, on which they lived.
