Bell Ringer: Verbals Review October 25
Review of Subject verb agreement • BrainPOP video: :)
Active vs. Passive Active Voice Passive Voice • The subject of the sentence performs the action • Ex: John devoured the pizza. • The action’s target becomes the subject • Ex: The pizza was devoured by John.
Active vs. Passive • EXAMPLES: • Candy is always given to the students by Mrs. Diaz and Mrs. Samples. • Ms. Samples and Mrs. Diaz are always giving candy to the students. • The balloon was blown up by his dad. • His dad blew up the balloon.
Rewrite this sentence to convey the opposite voice • “Chewy was such a good dog that he cleaned up all of his toys at the end of the day.” • What voice is the above sentence written in? • How would written it be in the opposite voice?
Which voice sounds better to you?
When writing…. • Most of the time it is better to use the ACTIVE VOICE when writing because it is stronger and more direct. • When you know the WHO of your sentence, it is always best to make the WHO perform the action of the sentence. • If you do not know the WHO of your sentence, PASSIVE voice may be used. • Ex: The bridge will soon be completed by workers.
