Oregon Country • Early on the Pacific Northwest went by the name Oregon Territory or Oregon Country • Hudson Bay Co. (British) vs. Rocky Mountain Fur Company(American) • Hudson Bay did not let anyone else trap in their territory. • Although the were rivals they did help one another in need.

How did fur trade lead to settlement? • Settlements are not good for the Fur Trade • The popularity and riches brought more settlers • Fur trappers got lost and accidentally found the Southern mountain pass.
Missionaries- What Started it all? • In 1831 four members of the Nez Perce and Flathead tribes went to St. Louis • They were interested in the white man’s religion • William Walker described the visit in a letter to a Protestant magazine. • Opened up Missions in PNW
Oregon Missionaries • Jason Lee and Daniel Lee went to witness to the Natives • Ended up in the Willamette Valley to stay close to the fort
Reinforcements • The Lees decided they needed more people at their mission… mainly more women! • They eventually received 52 people with different skills • They had a successful settlement of white settlers but did not reach out to the Native population. • Jason Lee was fired
Spokane Garry • Educated at a Christian School in 1825 • Returned to his tribe and became a leader • Taught his tribe Christian ways • Didn’t require them to give up their traditional way of life • New missionary families argued with Spokane Garry
