Mountain Men The Movement West
Warm-Up (IN Page 121 TOP) What personal qualities or attitudes would a person need in order to survive as a Mountain Man? Explain.
IN Page 122 • Set-up Cornell Notes on IN Page 122 • Title: Exploring the West • Essential Question: What led to the Mountain Man era?
Setting the Stage • Time: Early 1800s • Place: North American Continent, specifically-the West • Competitors: Spain, Great Britain, Russia & United States
Competition in the West • Great Britain controlled Canada • Russia claimed Alaska and down the west coast of N. America • Spain claimed the Southwest (became Mexico’s territory after the revolution in 1821) • United States purchased “Louisiana Territory” from France
The Louisiana Purchase • 1803 • U.S. purchased large amount of land from France for the sum of $15 million • Doubled the size of the United States and brought Americans “out West”
The Oregon Country • North Western part of North America • Controlled jointly by the United States & Great Britain • Both tried to get the most amount of settlers in that area so they would have the best claim to the land
Lewis & Clark • Before Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase he sent Meriwether Lewis & William Clark to explore the land • Expedition lasted from 1804-1806 • They reported the plant & animal life in the region as well as information about natives & chances of settlement • Since they told tale of streams full of beaver, trappers headed west to take part in the fur trade
Lewis & Clark Questions • When did Lewis & Clark set out on their expedition & when did they return? (month & year) • Where did Sacagawea join the expedition? • When did the eastbound party split up? • Why do you think the party split up? • What tribe is Sacagawea from?
