Welcome LE PARLOUER Pierre to evitherm forum Thermal Metrology Topic: Thermal diffusivity Written by Paul Nesvadba Date: 15-05-04 19:48:00 Thermal diffusivity is much easier to measure than thermal conductivity. It is because its dimension (m2/s) involves only length and time, both easy to measure. I have been developing a method for measuring the thermal diffusivity of foods and similar biological or medical materials. It "identifies" thermal diffusivity from measured temperature profiles. The profiles are generated by heating or cooling in a manner that does not have to be strictly controlled as long as the profiles T(x) or T(r) (in a slab or a cylinder) are approximately parabolic. There is no need for lengthy equilibration of the sample as in steady state or quasi-steady state methods (the heated needle probe or the Gustafsson hot disk or hot strip method) for thermal conductivity. The method works with materials that have thermal properties mildly varying with temperature. The entire temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity is obtained during a single heating or cooling run. For a material with thermal diffusivity of 10-6 m2/s (moist food) thie temperature range from -100°C to +100°C can be covered in less than 1 hour. Thermal conductivity is obtained by multiplying the thermal diffusivity by specific heat capacity and density. The former is easily obtained using DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and density by the mass/volume method.I would be happy to share my experience with interested parties and collaborate with the objective of developing, standardising and commercialising the method.Reference: Nesvadba P.
