  3. Rule: whenever you see addition or subtraction in a fraction, (top or bottom) put ( )'s around it. matching ( )'s will cancel from top to bottom! x + 1 x - 2

  4. Steps: 1. Factor numerator and denominator 2. cancel common *numbers (outside parenthesis) *variables (outside parenthesis) *matching ( )'s
