iPad initiative A comprehensive partnership between the College of Education and Human Development and the Office of Information Technology, involving: • infrastructure improvement • faculty and student engagement • research and evaluation Office of Information Technology | www.umn.edu/oit
The Project • Provide iPads to • ~450 CEHD First Year students. • ~30 CEHD First Year instructors • ~18 CEHD Student Services staff • Innovation project • Teaching and learning • Advising processes • Research

Student reactions to the iPad: A distraction? • “Made me more likely to multi-task while doing coursework”: Mean = 3.12*** • Focus group comments: • “I couldn’t get any homework done because it was a new toy!” • “80% of the apps are games.” • Survey open-ended comments: • “I didn’t think the iPad was any more or less distracting compared to laptops.” • “I was often distracted because of the numerous apps that were offered to me.” Office of Information Technology | www.umn.edu/oit
