Introduction to slide show. The news program I will be annualising is the 6 o-clock news on the 24th of February 2010, broad cast on the BBC and presented by George Alagiah. In this short slide show I will be showing you the codes and conventions of factual news reports.
Narrative structure. Narrative Structure is a technique which describes the details of a news story; who?, what?, where?, when?, why? and how? When George Alagiah introduces the main news storeys he immediately answers some that Narrative Structure poses.
After the intro to the program they then start to cover the stories with grater information and detail. Later in the program they cover the story of young orphan children that were deported between the 1920’s and the 1960’s. With the Narrative Structure they use we immediately find out the answers to the questions imposed earlier in the program. We now know; when the children were deported? “between the 1920’s and the 1960’s, where the children were deported to? “British colonies, such as Australia and Canada.
News Values. News Values help describe why news stories and selected or are not selected. In the stories that are covered in this news program have to cover certain News Values to make it new worthy, for example Amplitude; a big event which involves a large number of people.
In this particular news story it is apparent that there are many News Values involved. Familiarity: The Stafford Hospital story is a perfect example of Familiarity because it is close to Britain because Staffordshire is in England. Personalisation: It is also Personalisation because it is in the human interest because it is part of the NHS and most of the people in the UK will use the NHS.
