The Wonderful Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird By Jonna Michelle Austin
About the Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird The chestnut-bellied hummingbird is a dazzling bird with its iridescent green head , bronze back, and bright red belly. Its shining reddish brown back becomes a grayish buff on its tail. It has rufous chestnut under parts. It also has a glittering green chest and neck. It is tiny only 8.4 cm. It has a very puffy look with its small white puffy legs. It loves to eat nectar like all hummingbirds. It has a unique wing structure which allows them to perform acrobatic aerial maneuvers. When defending its territory it makes a “grr grr” sound. It has to eat a lot of nectar for the energy to beat its wings so fast.
Habitat • It lives in the humid montane forests. Also dry forests. It can be found in many places. Including the East Andes and the slopes of SerranAa de san Lucas. Which is located in South America.
Can We Save It • Why its endangered The Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird has been down listed as critically endangered because it is range restricted. It remains in a fragmented landscape in which continuing declines are likely. Their are only 250-999 left in the wild. • What are they doing to save it? The Chicamocha Project identified 14 sites where the hummingbird lives .Foundation Colibri Organization has worked with it since 2002. They are working at a reserve that supports the species. They intend to start a banding program to study the species ecology .NGO has conducted activities with school children. Unlike like other animals in the area the Yarigues National Park has not helped it. Its habitat falls right outside the park boundaries, but the new Chicamocha National park helps them a lot.
