The Butter Rock in Mahabalipuram (Krishna's Butterball) What is Krishna’s Butterball? Krishna's Butterball also known as Vaan Irai Kal (Stone of the Sky God) is a gigantic granite boulder resting on a short incline in the historical coastal resort town of Mamallapuram in the Tamil Nadu state of India. It is declared as a heritage site by UNESCO in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. This 250-ton boulder has a massive 20 feet high and 5 meters wide that has been a mystery for more than 1300 years. It has been balancing itself in a tiny base of a slippery slope that it looks like it will roll down the slope anytime.
An Attempt to Move the Boulder The Pallava King Narasimhavarman made an attempt to move the said boulder during 630-688 CE. With all his power and resources, it did not move the boulder even an inch. Years later, in 1908, it was again attempted to move by the Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley. His reason was he feared the people in the town at the base of the hill. Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley used 7 elephants to pull the rock and failed. Not even an inch. Krishna's Butterball now serves as a famous tourist destination in Tamil Nadu where people came to see this natural scene. It is even a picnic ground spot for the local people living near Krishna's Butterball. When going to Kanchipuram, it can be traveled via taxi. It is around 259 km from Tamil Nadu. Traveling through the land is much cheaper than air flights and better to hire a one-way trip taxi.
